Calling All Gardeners!

After a long hiatus, we are reviving our Gardening Volunteer Group at The Nature Center. If you or someone you know might be interested in working as a volunteer in our Nature Center gardens, read on…

Our initial, big project that’s now (literally) on the drawing board, is a renewed and greatly expanded Native Plants Garden to go where our current Wildflower Garden is, on the southwest (golf course) side of The Nature Center. The plan is to have this garden tie in with and complement the Native Plants Exhibit (now being designed) inside The Nature Center. This long-term project will require lots of time and effort from what we hope will be a large cadre of volunteers. This is an approved project of the Northeast Tennessee Master Gardeners Association.

Initial work, this spring and summer, will involve cleaning out the undesired plants and brush (especially poison ivy, Virginia creeper, and wild ginger), marking and labeling the native plants we wish to display, and designing the layout for new specimens to be added later. This fall we will be acquiring and planting some of these additional specimens.

If you want to learn more, or become one of our gardening volunteers, send an e-mail to mail@friendsofsteelecreek.org with “Gardens” in the Subject line, and we’ll get back to you soon.
