Park History Open House a great success!

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this weekend’s Steele Creek Park History Open House a great success.  There was a wonderful turnout of folks, all of whom are interested in the history of our beautiful park.  Those attending had an opportunity to mingle and share stories with each other and to view the SCP Timeline (dating back to 1936).  A number of individuals brought photos, news clippings and other memorabilia to share.  Terry Napier, Director of Bristol Tennessee’s Department of Parks and Recreation, then gave a fascinating account of what we currently know about the originas and early days of the Park.

Today’s event was the kickoff for a year-long celebration of the Park’s history, to culminate in a 50th anniversary “birthday party” next year.  Over the coming months we plan to continue collecting information, stories, photos and other items of interest related to the history of the Park, with the goal to assemble these into both a written record (i.e. book) as well as a video documentary.  If you (or someone you know) would like to help contribute materials to this effort, please contact us – we’d love to hear from you.  Written stories and digital copies of photos can be sent to mail@friendsofsteelecreek.org. For those with printed photos to share, either by donating originals or having them scanned, call Sonie at (423) 764-8828.

If you’d like to be notified of future 50th Anniversary events, e-mail us at the above address, check back here to our web site from time to time, or follow us on Facebook (Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park).
